Could An Old Pool Pump Be Illegal?

Energy efficient pool pump laws

There are a handful of laws centered around being energy-efficient and some of them are directed specifically at your pool. What do you need to know about energy-efficient pool pumps and how could these laws effect your pool?

In the past few years there have been a number of laws passed to help stop the flow of needless energy. When it comes specifically to your pool, there is a reason it is getting targeting.

“Homes with pools use 67% more energy”

Also, homes in the US spend about $1.5 billion a year on swimming pool systems. That is the equivalent of 24 medium-sized power plants needed just to operate those pools. And the emissions from those pools is equal to 1.3 million cars. That is a lot of energy, and that is the reason energy-efficient pool pumps like to EcoPump, Tesla, Jandy and Pentair were created. Depending on where you live, you may be required to get an energy-efficient pool pump or variable-speed pool pump, or you may be required to in the future.

In 2012, Arizona passed a law (Title 44) stating that pumps and motors have to meet energy efficient requirements and this law applies to existing pools as well as new ones.

In 2011, Florida passed a law banning the sale and installation on single-speed pool pumps that are energy hogs. The law says that once your old pool pump dies, you have to replace it with an energy efficient pool pump. Eventually they added a loophole, by why fight something that will save you money?

In California, the Title 20 law means that if a pool pump dies, you have to replace it with a more energy-efficient, two-speed or multi-speed pool pump.

The reason for these laws is that single-speed pool pumps are energy drainers that can cost you 90% more on your energy bills. In this day and age, people are becoming more and more aware of wasteful energy and the environment. These laws are meant to save on the amount of energy spent as well as to save your wallet. Whether it is a law in your state now or it will be, get an energy efficient pool pump like the EcoPump or Tesla, or a variable-speed pool pump like the Jandy or Pentair to make your pool ready for the future. Plus, be sure to check DSIRE (Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency) to see what incentives you could get for installing an energy efficient pool pump or a variable-speed pool pump.
