Do You Need a Pool Alarm?

Poolguard pool door alarm

There are a number of different pool alarms: some that are placed in the water or some that connect to doors or gates leading to the pool. Water alarms go off when a child (or other large object) falls in the pool and impacts the water. Alarms that attach to doors and gates go off when the child just opens the door. Depending on the setup of your pool area, there should be a specific pool alarm that works best for you.

The Poolguard door alarm DAPT-2 is designed to set off a pool alarm before a child falls in the pool. Since 1982, Poolguard / PBM Industries, Inc. has been building pool alarms, gate alarms, and door alarms to give your pool area an added layer of safety.

How It Works: When adults go through the door, they have 15 seconds using the adult pass through feature to keep the pool alarm from going off. When a child uses the door, the alarm will go off in seven seconds and it will keep going off until an adult resets it. Even if the door closes behind the child, the pool alarm will still go off.

It’s Loud: At 85 decibels at 10 feet away, it’s loud enough to hear. Always test out the sound first to make sure that you can hear the pool alarm from every corner of the house, and it this volume, you’ll be surprised how far away it’ll reach. Out of a number of pool alarms that Good Housekeeping tested, they claimed that this pool alarm was the loudest.

It’s Approved: The Poolguard pool alarm is a listed door alarm under UL 2017. That means it complies with all building codes and meets the safety requirements of signaling devices like:

  • The alarm goes off within seven seconds of the door opening.
  • TThe alarm sounds different from other sounds common in the house.
  • TThe alarm has to be at least 85 decibels when you are 10 feet away from the pool alarm.
  • TThe pool alarm lasts for 30 seconds or more.

If you have children, a pool alarm is a vital addition to any pool setup. Whether you go with the Poolguard door alarm DAPT-2 or a different pool alarm, you’ll be doing the right thing to make you pool safer.
