Diatomaceous earth, or DE filters, incorporates the exoskeletons of tiny diatoms to efficiently filter your swimming pool water. The exoskeletons coat the filter’s grid housing and act as a sieve to remove particulate. Ultimately, DE filters have the lowest micron rating out of the three different types of filters at about two to five microns, and are known as “water polishers.” Diatomaceous earth filters are typically the most popular choice in swimming pool filters when it comes to removing the smallest particles. They typically run at a high pressure, and must be backwashed once they need to be cleaned. There are three main types of swimming pool filters: sand, cartridge and Diatomaceous earth. Sand filters work the same way as Diatomaceous earth filters, but instead incorporates a bed of sand as the media bed. They also require backwashing. Cartridge filters use cartridge grids to trap dirt and debris.
The main difference between the three types of pool filters can be summarized by the micron size. A swimming pool filter’s efficiency is measured by its micron rating, meaning how many microns can pass through the filter. A micron is a unit of length equal to one millionth of a meter (1/1,000,000 m), or 0.0000394 of an inch. The lower the micron rating on the filter, the smaller the particles it can remove from your water.
