Take this example and fill in your own swimming pool’s gallons. And remember, the pool volume (gallons) multiplied by two equals daily gallons required for a 12 hour turn.
EX: For a pool that holds 15,000 gallons of water.
15,000 gallons x 2 turnovers/day= 30,000 gallons/day
Circulate 30,000 gallons of water every 24 hours. How many gallons per minute, or GPM, is this?
30,000 gallons/ 24 hours = 1,250 gallons/hour
1,250 gallons per hour/ 60 minutes = 20.8 gallons per minute
A 15,000 gallon swimming pool needs about 20 GPM output if you want to run it 24 hours a day. Use this example and plug in your own pool’s gallons to determine if a swimming pool pump with 1 HP fits your needs. Unless you have a large swimming pool, a pool pump that runs on 1 HP will work for your pool.
