Handheld Pool Vacuums

A handheld pool vacuum is the tool for the jobs a robot does not do: the leaves on the steps, the sand in a corner, the spa or hot tub where no robot fits, and the quick clean-up before guests arrive. The vacuums here are cordless and rechargeable, with a rotating brush head for corners, a telescopic pole for the pool floor and a short handle for close work. They are not robotic pool cleaners; they are the five-minute companion to one.

What to look for in a handheld pool vacuum

Suction and battery are the two numbers that matter. Brushless motors give the strongest pull for the weight, and a run time of an hour or two per charge covers several clean-ups between charges. A turbo setting is useful for heavy debris on steps but shortens the run time. Filter capacity decides how often you stop to empty it: a 50 oz filter at 120 microns holds sand, pollen and leaves without clogging in a single session.

The head and handle decide where it can reach. A head that rotates through 180 degrees follows steps and corners and gets under ladders; a telescopic pole reaches the floor of a pool, and a short handle makes it usable in a spa or hot tub in as little as 10 inches of water. An automatic shut-off when the vacuum leaves the water protects the battery and the motor.

Cordless and rechargeable

No hose, no pump connection, no cord: charge it, use it, rinse the filter.

Rotating brush head

Pivots to follow steps, corners and ladders where robots leave debris.

Pole or short handle

Pool floors on the pole, spas and hot tubs on the handle.

Pair it with a robot

A robot cleans the whole pool on a schedule; the handheld finishes the spots it misses.

Handheld Pool Vacuums: your questions answered

Is a handheld pool vacuum a replacement for a robotic cleaner?

No. A handheld cleans the spots you point it at, for an hour or two per charge. A robot cleans the whole floor, walls and waterline on its own, often on a schedule. Most owners run a robot for the pool and keep a handheld for steps, corners, spas and quick clean-ups.

Can I use a handheld pool vacuum in a spa or hot tub?

Yes. Fit the short handle and it works in water as shallow as 10 inches, which covers spas, hot tubs and pool steps.

How long does the battery last?

Up to two hours on the Niya Aquasweep S1, and up to an hour in normal mode or about 30 minutes in Turbo mode on the Aquasweep S10. An automatic shut-off powers the vacuum down when it leaves the water.

Do handheld pool vacuums work on every pool surface?

The Aquasweep models are rated for liner, gunite, fiberglass, ceramic, glass and mosaic surfaces, in inground and above-ground pools as well as spas.
