A robotic cleaner has its own low-voltage motors, pump and filter, so it does not borrow flow from the pool system. Drop it in, start a cycle and rinse its basket afterward. Premium robots add wall and waterline coverage, weekly scheduling and fine filtration for pollen and silt.
Suction-side cleaners connect to a skimmer or dedicated suction line and send debris to the pool filter. Pressure-side cleaners use a return line, and some need a separate booster pump, but often carry debris in their own bag. Those designs can make sense when the plumbing is already in place; otherwise, include hoses, valves and booster-pump energy in the real cost.
