Reviews are written by our in-house pool professionals from hands-on testing. How we test
Intex, Bestway and other metal-frame or inflatable-ring pools have thin vinyl walls, a soft floor and a frame the cable has to drape over. The robotic pool cleaners here are rated for above-ground pools up to 33 ft, weigh about 14 lb and either clean the floor only or climb gently, so they work on a soft-sided pool without stressing the liner or the frame.

Soft-sided pools behave differently from hard-walled pools. The floor flexes, the walls are not rigid enough for a heavy robot to climb reliably, and the water line sits against a vinyl wall that scratches more easily than plaster. The safest choices are floor-focused robots with soft rubber tracks or brushes, or light wall-climbing robots that climb gently rather than driving hard against the wall.
Cable routing is the other practical issue: with a corded robot the cable drapes over the top rail and the power supply sits on the ground at least 10 ft from the pool. A 36–40 ft cable is plenty for a 24 ft round or 32 ft oval pool.
Every robot here lists above-ground pools in its specifications, with a maximum pool length of 30–33 ft.
The Escape cleans the floor; the Cayman adds gentle wall climbing.
Top-load baskets and MaxBin bins empty in seconds, which matters on a pool that collects pollen and grass clippings.
The Cayman starts itself on a schedule from its power supply, so the pool is clean before the weekend.
HyperBrush scrubbing and a MaxBin basket in a floor-only robot that handles leaves and clippings without clogging, with a 1.5 hour cycle.

View the Dolphin CaymanRobots rated for above-ground pools use soft rubber tracks or brushes and light bodies, and they are used in Intex and Bestway pools every day. Avoid heavy inground robots with stiff brushes, keep the robot's brushes clean of grit, and rinse the robot after each cycle.
Floor-only robots do not try. Light wall-climbing robots such as the Cayman may climb part way up a soft wall and then return to the floor; that is normal. Rigid-wall above-ground pools let them climb fully.
On dry ground at least 10 ft from the pool edge, plugged into a GFCI outlet. The cable drapes over the top rail into the water. A 40 ft cable covers pools up to about 33 ft.
Choose a floor-only robot or a light wall-climbing model and let it run without weighting it down. Robots use water to hold themselves to the floor, so they do not dig in the way a suction cleaner can.
