Robotic Pool Cleaners for Small Pools

A small pool does not need a 35-pound commercial-grade robot. The robotic pool cleaners here are rated for pools up to about 33 ft, weigh as little as 14 lb, run 1.5 to 2 hour cycles and ship with 36–50 ft cables that will not pile up in a plunge pool, cocktail pool or small inground pool. Every one is a full-featured robot with its own motors, filter and navigation; they are simply sized for the job.

What to look for in a small-pool robot

Small pools have a different set of problems from large ones. Debris concentrates in a smaller volume, so the pool looks dirty sooner; cable slack from a 60 ft cord tangles in a 20 ft pool; and a robot that takes three hours to cover a 50 ft pool spends most of a cycle re-cleaning the same floor. The best small-pool robots are light, quick and have enough filter capacity to finish a cycle without clogging.

Many small pools are also the ones with the most steps, benches and tight radiuses. SmartNav and CleverClean navigation on the Dolphin models here map the pool instead of bouncing off walls, which makes a real difference in a compact freeform pool.

Weight under 20 lb

The Cayman and Escape weigh about 14 lb with water drained, so lifting out is a one-hand job.

1.5–2 hour cycles

Shorter cycles match the pool: a full clean of a 30 ft pool is done before lunch, and energy use per cycle is tiny.

36–50 ft cables

Enough reach for a pool up to 33 ft without a pile of cord on the deck; the Quantum's 60 ft swivel cable covers a small inground pool with slack to spare.

MaxBin or basket filtration

Top-load baskets you rinse in seconds, so a small pool with a few trees nearby stays clean on a daily schedule.

Robotic Pool Cleaners for Small Pools: your questions answered

What size pool counts as small for a robotic cleaner?

Anything under about 33 ft in length, including plunge pools, cocktail pools, most above-ground pools and small inground pools. Robots rated for 30–33 ft pools are built with cables and cleaning cycles sized for them.

Can I use a large inground robot in a small pool?

You can, and it will clean well, but you will manage 60 ft of cable in a 20 ft pool and run cycles that are longer than the pool needs. A robot rated for 33 ft pools is lighter, cheaper and easier to live with.

Do small-pool robots clean walls?

Some do. The Dolphin Cayman climbs and scrubs walls and the Quantum adds the waterline; the Escape is floor-only. If your small pool has steps and a waterline that collect scum, choose a wall-climbing model.

How long does a robot take to clean a small pool?

Most robots here run a 1.5 to 2 hour cycle and cover a 30 ft pool completely in that time. Models with a weekly timer can run a cycle every day or every other day on their own.
