Reviews are written by our in-house pool professionals from hands-on testing. How we test
Gunite pools finished in plaster, pebble or quartz are the toughest surfaces to keep clean: the texture holds dirt and algae, the finish sheds fine dust, and the tile line stains. They are also where a robotic pool cleaner shows the biggest difference. The robots here combine active scrubbing brushes with floor, wall and waterline coverage and fine filtration, so the finish and the tile stay clean between brushings.

Plaster and pebble finishes are porous and slightly rough, so dirt and algae embed in the surface instead of sitting on top of it. A robot needs real brushing action, not just suction, to lift that film: Dolphin HyperBrush and quad-brush systems spin faster than the robot moves, scrubbing the surface as the filter pulls the loosened material away. On a freshly plastered pool, let the finish cure and the plaster dust settle before running a robot.
Fine filtration is the second priority. New and aging plaster shed a fine white dust, and pebble finishes trap sand; NanoFilters, UltraFilters and Multi-Media bags capture particles that a standard cartridge lets back into the pool. Finally, the waterline on a gunite pool is tile, and tile scum is the chore everyone hates; a robot rated for waterline cleaning does that scrubbing for you.
HyperBrush, quad brushes and commercial-grade motors on the ProLine, Max-Series and Clear models.
Robots rated for waterline cleaning scrub the tile band where calcium and scum build.
NanoFilters, UltraFilters and Multi-Media for plaster dust and pebble sand.
Rough finishes wear brushes faster; replacement brushes and tracks are inexpensive and easy to fit.
Dual commercial-grade motors, strong brushing, waterline cleaning and Multi-Media filtration for the full range of debris a plaster pool sheds.

View the Dolphin SigmaQuad brushes, UltraFilters and built-in UV-C sanitation help a textured finish stay algae-free.
View the Clear UVXXL MaxBin with NanoFilters, waterline cleaning and app control, rated for pools up to 50 ft.
View the Dolphin QuantumNo. Robots use rubber tracks and soft brushes and weigh far less per square inch than a person walking on the floor. The finish wears the robot's brushes, not the other way round; inspect brushes each season and replace them when the ridges are gone.
Wait until the plaster has cured and the start-up brushing period is complete, usually about 28 days, and until the water chemistry is balanced. Running a robot during the curing period can trap plaster dust in the filter and brushes.
Any model rated for waterline cleaning, including the Dolphin Premier, Sigma and Quantum, the Clear S and Clear UV and the Aquabot Rapids models. The waterline page lists all of them.
With fine filtration, yes. Choose a robot with NanoFilters, UltraFilters or Multi-Media; a standard cartridge or coarse basket lets the finest dust pass back into the pool.
