Reviews are written by our in-house pool professionals from hands-on testing. How we test
Fiberglass pools are smooth, non-porous and quick to clean, but the gel coat shows scratches and the slick walls defeat cleaners that rely on friction. The robotic pool cleaners here climb with water-flow suction on rubber tracks, so they hold the walls of a fiberglass shell and scrub the waterline, steps and tanning ledge without marking the finish. All are rated by their manufacturers for fiberglass pools.

The surface of a fiberglass pool is so smooth that dirt has little to grip, which is why it cleans fast, but it is also why wheeled cleaners slip on the walls. Robots with rubber HyperGrip tracks and active brushes pull themselves against the wall with the water flowing through the filter, so they climb a glossy fiberglass wall and hold at the waterline.
Gel coat is tough but not immune to abrasion. Avoid any cleaner with hard plastic wheels or stiff bristles, rinse grit off the tracks after sandy days, and prefer a robot with fine filtration: on a smooth shell, fine silt and pollen are the debris you actually see.
Dolphin HyperGrip tracks and the Clear robots' quad-motor drive hold a slick fiberglass wall.
Fiberglass pools have molded steps and benches where scum collects; robots rated for waterline cleaning reach them.
NanoFilters, UltraFilters and Multi-Media capture the fine dust a glossy shell makes obvious.
Many fiberglass pools are under 40 ft, so a 2 hour cycle on a weekly timer keeps them spotless.
Triple motors, quad brushes and gyroscope navigation for sure-footed climbing on a smooth shell, with NanoFilters and a 3-year warranty.
View the Dolphin SigmaQuad motors, UltraFilters, weekly timer, app and remote, rated for pools up to 50 ft with a 3-year warranty.
View the Clear SFloor, walls and waterline with an XXL MaxBin, NanoFilters, app control and a 60 ft swivel cable.
View the Dolphin QuantumA 14 lb floor-and-wall robot for pools up to 33 ft with a MaxBin basket and a weekly timer.
View the Dolphin CaymanRobots rated for fiberglass use rubber tracks and soft brushes and are used in fiberglass pools routinely without marking the gel coat. Rinse grit off the tracks after sandy or windy days and replace worn brushes.
The gel coat is too smooth for wheels to grip. Track-driven robots hold the wall with suction created by the filter pump, so they climb where wheeled cleaners slide back down.
Robots with wall and waterline coverage scrub the vertical faces and the waterline of molded steps and benches. Horizontal step treads near the surface are covered by most models; very shallow tanning ledges may need a quick brush.
On a shell with few steps and little vegetation nearby, yes. If the waterline collects a scum line or the walls dull with fine dust, choose a floor, wall and waterline model.
