Scheduling is the feature you will use most. The app replaces the buttons on the power supply with a calendar: daily, every other day or custom days, with the cleaning mode and cycle length you want. Manual drive lets you steer the robot to a corner or a pile of leaves for a quick spot clean, which otherwise means lifting it out and dropping it in. Status alerts tell you when the cycle is done or the filter is full.
Connection type matters. Wi-Fi robots connect through your home network, so you can control them from anywhere; Bluetooth-only robots work from the deck. Dolphin's myDolphin Plus power supplies use Wi-Fi and also work with Siri voice shortcuts on the Sigma. Note that the robot itself is underwater, so the app talks to the power supply, which means app features need a corded robot or a cordless robot sitting in its charger.

The power supply needs to reach your home Wi-Fi network for remote control from anywhere. If the signal is weak at the equipment pad, a Wi-Fi extender solves it; Bluetooth models work from the deck without a network.
Commands go to the power supply, which sends them down the cable. That is why app control is a corded-robot feature; cordless robots receive app commands while docked or at the surface.
If you want scheduling, a weekly timer on the power supply does the same job for less. Pay for the app if you want remote starts, manual drive for spot cleaning, cleaning-mode selection or alerts on your phone.
