Reviews are written by our in-house pool professionals from hands-on testing. How we test
A floor-only robot leaves the walls, steps and corners for you. The robotic pool cleaners here are rated for wall cleaning: they climb vertical surfaces on rubber tracks or brushes, scrub as they go and work the curves and steps where dirt and algae settle. Many add waterline scrubbing on top. If your pool has walls you can see dirt on, this is the list to shop from.

Robots climb by pulling water through their filter: the pump flow creates suction against the wall while the tracks or brushes drive upward. Strong motors, clean filters and grippy rubber tracks are what keep a robot on the wall; a clogged filter is the usual reason a robot stops climbing. Dolphin's HyperGrip tracks and the Clear robots' quad-motor drive climb smooth fiberglass and tile as well as rough plaster.
Navigation decides whether the robot climbs the whole pool or the same wall. SmartNav, CleverClean and gyroscope systems map the pool and climb each wall in turn; simpler robots climb when they happen to hit a wall. If you have a freeform pool with many curves, the mapped robots are worth it.
The Dolphin Cayman climbs and scrubs the walls of pools up to 33 ft and returns to the floor.
The ProLine (Premier, Sigma and Quantum), the Clear S and UV and the Aquabot Rapids add waterline scrubbing.
Track-driven robots climb smooth surfaces where wheeled cleaners slip.
Mapped navigation covers vertical step faces and the walls of benches and sun shelves.
Triple motors, quad brushes and a gyroscope that keeps the Sigma vertical and on course on every wall.

View the Dolphin PremierA 14 lb floor-and-wall robot with a MaxBin and weekly timer for pools up to 33 ft.
View the Dolphin CaymanFour motors drive the Clear S up smooth walls to the waterline, with UltraFilters, app and remote and a 3-year warranty.
View the Clear SNine times out of ten the filter is full: robots climb using the water flow through the filter, so a packed basket or cartridge removes the suction that holds them on the wall. Rinse the filter. Worn tracks and brushes, or a floor-only model, are the other causes.
They clean the vertical faces of steps and benches and often the treads near the floor. Shallow top treads and tanning ledges may be out of reach for some models; waterline-rated robots cover the most.
Yes. Track-driven robots hold the wall with suction rather than friction, so they climb smooth vinyl and fiberglass. Soft-sided above-ground pools are the exception; see the Intex page.
On a hard-sided above-ground pool, yes: the walls collect a scum line and algae just like an inground pool. On a soft-sided pool, a floor-focused robot is the safer choice.
