To clean the waterline a robot has to climb the wall, sense the surface, hold position with part of its body out of the water and keep its brushes turning against the tile while the pump flow that normally holds it to the wall is weakened by air. That takes stronger motors, better sensors and smarter software than a floor-and-wall robot needs, which is why waterline cleaning marks the step from mid-range to premium in every brand's range.
The reward is the chore nobody likes. A robot that scrubs the tile line every cycle removes the fresh scum before it bonds and slows the calcium scale a saltwater or hard-water pool deposits. Established scale and heavy mineral lines still need a tile cleaner once a season, but day to day the band stays clean. It removes fresh scum and slows scale, but hardened calcium deposits need a tile cleaner or pumice stone. Run the robot regularly after a deep clean and the line stays clean far longer.
