Reviews are written by our in-house pool professionals from hands-on testing. How we test
A freeform pool asks a robot to recognize changing wall angles, broad curves, coves and sometimes separate shallow zones. Track-driven cleaners with wall coverage and systematic navigation adapt better than simple bump-and-turn machines. The models here climb walls, turn within irregular outlines and provide enough control or repeatable routing to cover areas that do not form neat lanes.

Robots do not need a 'freeform mode.' They sense walls and resistance, then update their route. Gyroscope or mapped navigation helps the cleaner vary its angle instead of tracing the same curve, while independent drive tracks make tight corrections around coves.
Benches, spas and very shallow shelves can divide a freeform pool into zones. App or remote steering is useful for a missed pocket, but the robot should still complete the main floor and walls automatically.
Independent drive corrections follow curves without wide wheeled arcs.
Climbing models clean curved vertical surfaces where debris and algae settle.
Systematic angle changes reduce repeated passes through the center.
An app or remote can target a cove after the automatic cycle.
No special connection or shape setting is required. Prioritize navigation, track-driven turning and the correct maximum pool length.
A properly sized track-driven model normally turns out. Worn tracks, a clogged filter or an unusually tight shelf transition are the common causes of repeated stalls.
Usually not across a raised spillway. Treat the spa as a separate body and use a compatible handheld cleaner or move the robot only if its manual permits it.
