Reviews are written by our in-house pool professionals from hands-on testing. How we test
Pool robots handle vertical step faces better than shallow horizontal treads. A wall-climbing model can brush risers, benches and swim-outs when there is enough water to keep the body submerged, but narrow top steps may be too small for the robot to settle on. The cleaners here climb walls and adapt to transitions; the content sets realistic expectations so 'step cleaning' does not become an empty promise.

The lowest broad treads are often covered as part of the floor route. Vertical risers are brushed during a climb. As the robot reaches shallower upper treads, its body may break the surface or no longer fit, causing it to turn back.
Navigation helps the robot approach steps from several angles, and app steering can target a broad missed tread. Keep handrails, toys and cleaner hoses out of the route, and brush the shallowest step toward the floor before a scheduled cycle.
Broad, submerged steps are the most likely horizontal surfaces to be covered.
Wall-rated brushes scrub these during climbing passes.
Shallow water and narrow treads often require a quick manual brush.
Systematic navigation improves coverage around a wide entry area.
They often clean lower treads and vertical risers, but no model guarantees every shallow upper tread. Body size and water depth set the limit.
It can in a very tight gap. Follow the clearance guidance in the manual and block or brush narrow areas the robot cannot safely enter.
It can help target a broad lower step or bench, but a handheld brush remains faster for a shallow top tread.
