Reviews are written by our in-house pool professionals from hands-on testing. How we test
A tanning ledge is the feature most likely to sit outside a robot's reliable range. The cleaner needs enough water over its body to keep the pump submerged and enough grip to cross the ramp from the deep floor. The full-coverage models here have strong wall traction and smart navigation, but no responsible seller should promise that a robot will clean a shelf only a few inches deep. Choose for the main pool first, then use the guidance below for the ledge.

If the robot rises far enough that its intake draws air, it will turn back or lose grip. A deeper Baja shelf may receive partial passes, while a shallow sun shelf usually needs a brush or handheld vacuum. This is normal and protects the pump.
The transition matters too. A broad ramp is easier than a sharp vertical lip. Strong track grip and a clean filter help the robot climb the transition, but furniture, umbrella sleeves and bubblers can create obstacles that should be cleared before a cycle.
Select for pool length, debris and wall-waterline coverage before considering the shelf.
Very shallow water is outside normal robotic-cleaner operation.
Gradual transitions give tracks a better chance of reaching a deeper shelf.
A brush or handheld vacuum remains realistic for the shallowest area.
It depends on water depth and the transition. Deeper shelves with a gradual ramp may receive partial coverage; very shallow shelves usually do not keep the robot fully submerged.
Models normally sense loss of grip or air and turn back, but do not place or operate a robot on a shelf outside the depth guidance in its manual.
Brush debris toward the main pool before the automatic cycle or use a small handheld pool vacuum for the shelf itself.
